This project was mainly initiated to protect Bengal tigers and their habitats while also sustaining tiger population.
Project Tiger was started in April 1973 by Government of India for the protection of tigers in India.
As of 2022 tiger census, there were 3167 tigers in India. Which is nearly 75% of the World's total tiger population.
Kailash Shankala was the firest director of Project Tiger, and he was an Indian biologist and conservationalist widely known as "Tiger MAn of India".
Madhya Pradesh has the state with the highest number of tiger reserves[6].
The Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand is the first tiger reserve in India.
The largest tiger resreve in India is the Nagargunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve located in Andhara Pradesh.
The smallest tiger reserve in India is the Bor Wildlife Snctuary located in Maharashtra.
India now has 55 tiger reserves covering around 78,735 sq km of area.
In Kerala there are two tiger reserves; the Periyar Tiger Reserve and the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve.
India has only one species of tiger (Panthera Tigris) and one subspecies of Bengal Tiger, also called Royal Bengal Tiger.
